Black Sheep never looked so good
“I think more and more women want to look good while doing good,” states entrepreneur Christina DesVaux, who, along with Uruguayan textile designers Victoria Varela and Florencia Bianchi, is launching a knitwear line El Origen Wool.
Playing with the concept of “black sheep”, their 2010 collection is hand-knit in Uruguay with 100% naturally colored merino-wool–in yummy hues ranging from cream to black coffee. Colored wool is often discarded because it is inconvenient to dye industrially. “We aim to salvage it, preserve a traditional textile technique, and create incredibly wearable and beautiful pieces,” said DesVaux, currently an MBA student at the University of Chicago. Using the motto “Wool is Good,” the team also wants to put aside ideas that handknit sweaters are scretchy, bulky, or a thing of the past. The line includes elegant car-coats, classic cardigans, sweeping shawls, and playful knit accessories–each hand-crafted by female artisans. It is modeled by Annie Costner, daughter of Kevin Costner, and Chrisitna’s best freind from Brown University.
